Invest in People
Education, trade schools, and health care are the highest-yield investment a society can make — higher education pays back over 200%. We fund them heavily, through competing non-profits on yearly-renewed contracts, or we are eclipsed by the societies that do.
The highest-yield investment is a person
Education, trade schools, and health care return more than any other public spending. Higher education pays back over 200%. Health care is the insurance on that investment — for a reasonable cost, we don’t lose the education, time, and money already put into a person.
So we invest heavily
We back universal early-childhood education and higher learning, alongside trade schools and work exchanges — because a society that develops every person outcompetes one that develops only a few.
Delivered by competing non-profits
None of this means a new bureaucracy. These services are delivered by non-profits that compete for the public’s money on government contracts renewed each year — measured against one another, exactly as in Where Profit Is Perverse. No incumbent is entitled to the work; each year it goes to whoever serves the public best.
The choice is simple: invest in people, or be eclipsed by the societies that do.
